Derbyshire County Council has a statutory duty to produce a Local Transport Plan which sets out strategies for the development of local, integrated transport, supported by a programme of transport initiatives. Our current Plans run until March 2011 and we are now preparing for the next Plans which will run from April 2011 onwards.

The Plan must take a long term view stretching to 2026, linked to details of how the Plan is to be implemented in the shorter term.

The starting point for the development of the next Local Transport Plan is the national transport goals. These goals, listed below, were outlined in a Department for Transport paper called ‘Delivering a Sustainable Transport System’ (November 2008):-

·     Tackle climate change

·     Support economic growth

·     Promote equality of opportunity

·     Contribute to better safety security and health

·     Improve quality of life and promote a healthy natural environment

Last year we asked about the relative importance of the transport goals for Derbyshire and what the challenges are for Derbyshire in aiming for these goals. As well as the results of these consultations, we have included challenges through policy and data analysis, to create an overall impression of Derbyshire’s challenges in relation to the goals. We have then considered what range of measures is available to us to address the identified challenges. This work has been summarised in a short background paper, ‘Local Transport Futures: Challenges and Options Consultation’ which can be found on the following link: www.derbyshire.gov.uk/transportconsultation.

On this link you will find access to two questionnaires, a shorter public version and a more detailed one. We would like you to complete the more detailed version either online or you can request a paper version which can be returned in a pre-paid envelope.

The closing date for this consultation is Thursday 17th June 2010.

Please note that at this stage we are describing broad policies and packages of options for Derbyshire, not individual schemes and locations, as these are what we need to compare at this stage in developing the Local Transport Plan.

The results of this survey will feed into the draft long term strategy for Derbyshire to 2026, and will be the basis of developing a shorter term Implementation Plan. There will be a further consultation once we have drafted the Strategy and Implementation Plan, likely to be late summer/ early autumn this year. We will then be in a position to finalise the Plan ready for implementation next year.
